![]() The only other option I had would be to link the MIDI between AbletonLive and Modul8 instead of being triggered from my keyboard. I was quite convinced that my project was just not going to work anymore and felt rather upset at this point □ The only solution I could think of, to make the right layers visible at the right points in time would be to control the opacity of each layer instead of turning them on and off This created even more problems, for example once all clips were playing, so much RAM/file access was taken up that the clips were totally jumpy, playing at about 1 frame per second!!! ![]() However, although the clips now turned on and stayed on when you pressed each keyboard key, they wouldn’t turn off again! This meant that when some previous layers are supposed to repeat themselves later on in the song, there’s no way of seeing them because they were covered up by the more recent layers that have been turned on.Īt this point I didn’t know what to do, I tried mapping all sorts of different buttons but it turned out once started, there was absolutely no way of stopping the clips. I decided to go back to version 2.6 and pray that it wouldn’t freeze again! So after recreating the project for about the 5th time now, I was starting to lose the will to live! I mapped out the triggers for each layer, assuming that the on/off button for each layer would let you turn it on and off with the MIDI controller. So it was clear that this version 2.0 of the software was also very glitchy and the MIDI control just did not want to work. ![]() There were no settings available that might affect how the control worked. This was ridiculous and wouldn’t work at all in my performance. I tried pressing the key and letting it go, and I tried holding it down, but it seemed the only way to vaguely get the films to be visible was to constantly hammer down the key as fast as possible. When I tested this though, the layer just flashed on for a split second then went to black again. So I carefully calculated exactly which clip should be triggered and when, working my way in a logical manor along the keyboard. _ MIDI mapping in Modul8Ībout a month before I had done some tests in Modul8 v2.6 to test the MIDI mapping and it appeared that you could control practically any setting with the MIDI keys and knobs. However, when I thought all the issues were solved, I was wrong… But I made do and managed to produce a close enough replica of the first project. The problem about downgrading the software was that there were some functions which were not there anymore, such as smooth fading between clips and being able to change the layer blending mode. So I managed to get hold of version 2.0 and had my fingers crossed that it would work! I had to start from scratch again, rebuilding the structure of the video layers and their settings. However the next time I created the arrangement, the software froze and I lost it again!Īt this point I was eager to find a solution to the problem, so I decided to try and get a different version of the program, as from researching it sounded like it was v.2.6 that had these errors. I came to the realization that I would have to keep the project open until I did the live performance, which was going to be at least a week away. So I lost everything I’d been working on so far, and at first I wasn’t overly disappointed because I remembered how everything was supposed to look and fit together. I searched online for help on this matter but it seemed as though others were having the same problem and there was no solution. The project was going very well until I started coming across glitches in the software…Īfter I’d sorted each clip perfectly in the project, I had an unfortunate problem which was that even though you can save these files, they won’t ever reopen again properly. saturation, contrast and lightness) to some clips to make them display at their best potential. I had to scale each clip to the correct size and applied a few small colour effects (e.g. I had to add a luma key to quite a few of the layers to ensure other bits show through underneath (an example below)… I created lots of layers – one for each clip, and I arranged these mostly in the order that they appear throughout the song. It seemed pretty straightforward in the end so I got to work by importing all my videos into the media bank. I’ve never used Modul8 before and couldn’t find many tutorials online so spent a lot of time using trial and error to get to grips with the layout and controls. Now that all of my audio and video clips are finished I need to arrange them perfectly to be triggered in the live performance. Arranging the video layers in Modul8 (and lots of problems!)
